A significant cultural centre, Stellenbosch has many galleries and museums (SASOL, Rupert Museum) showcasing important national and international art collections and the Stellenbosch Conservatoire is the country’s oldest music school. There’s also the ‘Village Museum’ consisting of four historical buildings taking you back two centuries ago.
The University of Stellenbosch – known as ‘Maties’ – has ‘produced’ many of the country’s great sporting heroes, including more than 155 Rugby Springboks, amongst them three very famous Wine Farmers of Stellenbosch = Hempies du Toit of ‘Annandale, Jan ‘Boland’ Coetzee of ‘Vriesenhof’ and Jannie Engelbrecht of ‘Rust en Vrede’.

Stellenbosch Botanical Garden is located in the historical centre of the town and is the oldest University Botanical Garden in South Africa. This compact garden houses an enormous diversity of plants, both indigenous to South Africa and exotic.
